Removing and installing front vehicle level senders

General notes:

Vehicles with adaptive suspension and/or gas discharge lamps have automatic headlight range control fitted as standard equipment  →Rep. gr.94.

The adaptive suspension and the automatic headlight range control functions require information on the compression and rebound travel at the front and rear suspension.

For this purpose, the position of the left/right track control link in relation to the body is transferred to the front left vehicle level sender -G78- and the front right vehicle level sender -G289- via a coupling rod. The senders then transmit electrical signals to the gas discharge light control unit (left/right) -J343/344-.

Servicing left/right gas discharge bulb control unit -J343/344- →Rep. gr.94

On the rear axle these signals are supplied by the vehicle level sender (rear, left) -G76- and vehicle level sender (rear, right) -G77- to the gas discharge light control units (left/right) -J343/344-.

These signals are required for calculating the current attitude of the vehicle.

The automatic headlight range control reacts to changes in the suspension height (attitude of the vehicle).

The following situations may produce a change in the suspension height:

t   Towing a trailer/caravan

t   Different loads (vehicle unladen, partly laden or fully laden)

   WARNING

Headlight adjustment, adaption of self-levelling suspension and calibration of lane departure warning system

The reference position must always be adapted, the headlight basic setting checked and the lane departure warning system calibrated if:

t   Track control link has been removed and installed or renewed,

t   Work has been performed on the vehicle level sender,

t   Vehicle level sender has been renewed,

t   Coupling rod for vehicle level sender has been detached from track control link.

Re-adapting reference position  → Chapter

Basic setting of headlights  →Rep. gr.94

Calibration of lane departure warning system  → Chapter

Removing

–   Unplug connector -3-.

–   Remove hexagon nut -2-.

–   Remove hexagon bolt -1-.

–   Take out vehicle level sender.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence. Note the following points:

Locating hook on sender bracket must engage on subframe.

Lever of sender must face forwards.

Tightening torques  → Chapter

–   Re-adapt reference position  → Chapter.

–   Perform basic setting of headlights  →Rep. gr.94.

–   Perform calibration of lane departure warning system  → Chapter.
